10 things to do in London this Summer
Okay, we’ll admit we’re a little biased, but we believe London is hands-down the best city out there, and summer is when it’s in its element. With so many fun activities and events happening, there’s no excuse not to get out there and explore.
To give you a little inspiration, we’ve put together a list of some of the best things to do in London this summer, whatever your budget – and whatever the weather!
1. Catch a movie under the stars at Rooftop Film Club Stratford
Grab some popcorn, settle into a deckchair, and soak up a classic film with London’s skyline as your backdrop at East London’s top outdoor cinema. This summer, they’re showing everything from rom-coms to action blockbusters, on top of themed nights like a Mamma Mia pyjama party. Just remember to bring a blanket in case the evening turns chilly.
2. Cool off at a lido
Open water swimming is kind of a big deal right now, and there are loads of great spots to give it a go in London. From traditional lidos like Brockwell and London Fields to wild(ish) swimming spots like Hampstead Heath Ponds and even city centre options like Eden Dock at Canary Wharf, there’s a swimming spot for everyone. Check ahead on sunny days as you may need to book at some locations.
3. Wander through Fenton House and Garden in Hampstead
Hidden away behind ancient brick walls, Fenton House is a beautifully preserved 17th-century home surrounded by formal gardens and orchards. On clear days, there are panoramic views of as far away as St Paul’s from the house’s attic floor. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’ve stepped out of London for the afternoon.
4. Explore the V&A East Storehouse
This latest addition to the V&A family has a mind-boggling 250,000 objects on display, abandoning the usual staid museum experience for a storeroom-like vibe that puts visitors right among the collections as museum employees go about the work of cataloguing and curating. It’s modern, playful, and extremely immersive.
5. Sip cocktails with a view at La Yam, Holborn’s new rooftop bar
Looking for your new go-to summer hangout? Head up to La Yam, a brand-new rooftop bar perched above Holborn station. Expect panoramic views of the Shard and the BT Tower, sunshine-friendly cocktails, and a chilled Mediterranean vibe. Yes please.
6. Eat your way through Borough Market
It’s a classic for a reason. Whether you’re grabbing a fresh juice, tucking into Ethiopian street food, or just hunting down the best cheese toastie in London (spoiler: it’s Kappacasein), Borough Market never disappoints.
7. Tuck into a Sunday roast at The Holly Bush in Hampstead
This cosy 18th-century pub tucked up a quiet Hampstead lane is about as charming as it gets. Book ahead for their famous Sunday roast (we love the roast porchetta) – it’s one of the best in London, and the perfect end to a long summer walk on the Heath.
8. Take a stroll along The Line, London’s outdoor art trail
If you fancy a walk with a twist, The Line is a free outdoor art trail that stretches from the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to The O2, featuring striking sculptures and installations along the way. If you walk it all in one go, it takes around 4 hours, or you can split it up into sections. Check out an interactive map here.
9. Kayak down the Thames at sunset
For a totally different view of London, hop in a kayak and paddle along the Thames as the sun sets. Companies like Secret Adventures and London Kayak Company offer guided twilight tours that take you past landmarks like the Houses of Parliament and St Paul’s – all with good quality gear and under the watchful eye of trained guides.
10. Catch an open-air gig or theatre show at Somerset House or Regent’s Park
Nothing says summer in London quite like live music or theatre under the open sky. From indie gigs in Somerset House’s courtyard to theatre under the stars at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, this is your sign to grab a ticket and bring a blanket.
Whether you’re sun-chasing or just looking for an excuse to explore somewhere new, London has something for everyone – and it’s all right on our doorstep.
